Welcome to The Filipino Mom

This blog is based upon my personal experiences managing my mental health conditions as a first generation Filipino American. I learned quickly after my diagnoses that my view on mental health was very different from that of my parents – who immigrated to The States in 1974 and 1975.

This journey of self love and acceptance of a chemical imbalance has been very isolating with an ever-present feeling of shame and guilt. I pray that through what I share on this platform, those suffering in silence gain a voice and support that maybe has never been given to them.

What to expect

I want to start by saying that I am in no way an expert on any medical condition and would ask that you please consult with a mental health professional or physician for any medical diagnosis and treatment.

I am not a professional writer so please prepare yourselves for grammatical errors and improper syntax – Guys, I’m a mom of five, I have no time to be out here jabbing away the day, so no frills or fancy things. I just want to share my story in hopes to begin to change the narrative.

You will see me reference my relationship with Christ. I have been a Christ follower for more than half of my life and it is a HUGE part of who I am. So if a Christ-centered blog is not your thing, no hard feelings if you leave.  I am not ashamed of what my Lord and Savior has done in to turn my trials into testimonies.

What you will not see

I have been asked by some family members to not broadcast names or share photos of them, so to respect their wishes and those of any other contributor on my blog, I will not post any pictures of anyone else but myself. This subject is a very sensitive subject for the majority of the Filipinos I come in contact with. Most do not want to share their struggles but do want to make a difference, and I respect that.

What will I talk about

  • Why is mental health is a stigma in the Filipino Community?
  • Who is helping change the narrative?
  • What is mental health?
  • How can I begin to help myself?
  • My mental health journey
  • My children’s mental health journey
  • Collaborations with others Filipinos and their journey
  • How has my relationship with Christ helped me?
  • A self harm story…
  • How our family manages all of our conditions
  • A social media support group
  • And so much MORE!

Again, welcome to my blog. I am so happy you are here and look forward to meeting you- in person or virtually, and helping you through this platform.
